Color wheel work is DLP-specific. The wheel spins at 7,200-15,000 RPM and sequentially passes red, green and blue light through to the DMD chip, which mirrors each colour onto the screen in time-sliced order. A sync sensor watches a slot or magnet on the wheel and tells the formatter when each segment is in front of the lamp. When the bearing wears, the wheel wobbles and the rattle starts. When a segment cracks (heat stress, impact during transport), you get a rainbow streak in the projected image. When the sync sensor fouls or drifts, you get colour fringing.

Rattle from inside the casing
Distinct rattle synced to the wheel RPM, especially during the spin-up phase after power-on. Bearing wear or sync-magnet loose, motor service runs ₹1,500-₹3,500.
High whine at full speed
Whine that climbs as the wheel reaches operating RPM. Bearing failing, lubricant gone, motor running shaft-on-housing. Replace before it seizes mid-use.
Rainbow streak in image
Brief rainbow stripe across the picture, especially on motion or bright content. Color wheel sync slip, the wheel is not aligned with the formatter timing window.
Cracked / chipped segment
Broken segment visible if you look through the lamp door, or sudden colour cast appearing on screen. Heat stress, transport damage, end-of-life. Wheel replacement only.
Service error 'wheel speed'
On-screen fault code referring to wheel speed, color speed, or a similar phrase. Sync sensor fouled by dust or motor not reaching rated RPM.
Wheel won't spin up
Lamp lights, fan runs, but no image because the wheel isn't spinning. Motor coil failure, controller flag, or wheel physically jammed by a dust-bunny in the housing.

Motor service or wheel swap
Bearing service, sync-sensor clean, magnet re-seat, motor coil test. If the bearing has gone shaft-on-housing or a segment is cracked, full wheel replacement, sourced from authorised distributor.
Calibrate, test, deliver
Refit the wheel, run the projector through a colour test pattern and a motion clip, confirm no rainbow streak under bright content. Then deliver back to your address or you collect from the store.

Yes, in about 6 in 10 cases. If the wheel itself is intact and the bearing isn't yet shaft-on-housing, a clean and re-lube (₹1,500-₹3,500) recovers it. We assess at the workshop before quoting.
Bearing wear is gradual but the rattle threshold is a step change, the lubricant is finally gone or the bearing race has finally pitted enough to be audible. Common after 3,000-5,000 hours on home-cinema use, sooner on rental and auditorium projectors that run 6+ hours a day.
Yes, rainbow streaks caused by sync slip or wheel timing are repairable. The 'rainbow effect' some viewers see on perfectly healthy DLP projectors at high motion is a perception phenomenon (eye saccade), and that one is not repairable, it's how single-chip DLP works.
No. Color wheels are DLP-specific. 3LCD projectors (most Epson, Panasonic and Sony VPL units) use three separate LCD panels (red, green, blue) and don't have a wheel. If you have an Epson or Panasonic showing rainbow stripes, the cause is different (panel mis-alignment or convergence drift).

Short term yes, long term no. A failing bearing will eventually seize, and a seizure under power can throw a segment into the lamp door, which damages both the wheel and the lamp. Worth servicing before that point.
