What the projector lamp hour counter actually does
Short answer: The lamp hour counter tracks total hours of lamp operation. Projector firmware uses this counter to display replacement warnings, limit startup attempts near end of lamp life, and — on some models — refuse to operate once a hard cutoff is reached. Resetting the counter without replacing the lamp tells the projector its dangerous old lamp is brand new, bypassing every safety guard the manufacturer built in. The only correct time to reset the lamp counter is immediately after installing a new genuine OEM lamp.
Lamp counter reset by brand — legitimate procedure after new lamp installation
Epson projectors — lamp counter reset
After installing a new lamp module in your Epson projector, power on the unit. Press Menu on the remote. Navigate to Reset → Reset Lamp Hours (some models label this Reset Lamp Timer or Lamp Replacement Completed). The projector will ask for confirmation — accept it. On Epson EB-series corporate models, this menu may only appear when the lamp warning indicator is active. On EH home cinema models, the reset option is available regardless of current hours. After reset, verify the counter reads 0H in Menu → Info.
BenQ projectors — lamp counter reset
After installing the replacement lamp in your BenQ projector, power on and press Menu. Go to System Setup → Advanced → Lamp Timer Reset. On some BenQ models (MH, MW, and MS series), the Lamp Timer Reset option is greyed out until the lamp warning threshold has been reached — you may need to hold OK / Enter for 5 seconds on the confirmation prompt. If the option remains unavailable, try the alternate path: System Setup → Reset All resets lamp timer as part of a full factory reset, but also erases all custom picture settings. Use Lamp Timer Reset specifically wherever it is accessible.
Optoma projectors — lamp counter reset
After replacing the lamp on an Optoma projector (EH, ZH, UHD series), power on and press Menu. Navigate to Setup → Lamp Hours Reset or Setup → Service → Lamp Hours depending on model. Confirm the reset. On some Optoma models, the service menu is access-protected with a PIN (usually the default PIN is printed in the manual). If you encounter a PIN prompt, check the user manual for your specific model or call us — we can access the service menu for your Optoma at the doorstep visit.
Sony VPL projectors — lamp counter reset
After replacing the lamp on a Sony VPL projector, power on and press Home or Menu. Navigate to Setup → Lamp/Light Sensor Settings → Lamp Usage Timer Reset. Confirm when prompted. On Sony VPL-F and PHZ laser-light models, this menu may be labelled Light Usage Timer as they use a laser phosphor source instead of a lamp — the reset procedure is the same, and should only be done after a laser module replacement, which is a service-level procedure. Costs for Sony laser module replacement: ₹15,000 to ₹45,000 depending on model and laser output.
When NOT to reset the lamp counter
Never reset to extend a lamp you haven't replaced
The single most dangerous lamp counter misuse is resetting it on an old lamp to avoid replacement cost. A UHP lamp (the high-pressure mercury-vapour lamp used in most projectors) accumulates thermal and UV stress with every operating hour. Beyond the rated hours, the lamp's outer envelope (the glass shell) becomes brittle and the internal pressure increases due to electrode degradation. An overdriven lamp can crack or — in rare cases — shatter, sending hot glass shards and mercury vapour into the projector optical block. This causes ₹8,000–₹25,000 in collateral damage beyond the lamp itself. Genuine lamp replacement costs far less than optical block cleaning and component replacement after an explosion.
Checking a used projector for a reset lamp counter
If you are buying a used projector, check the lamp hours in the Info menu. Low lamp hours on an older projector should be treated with suspicion — the counter may have been reset. Physical inspection signs of an old lamp: discoloration or browning of the lamp housing, visible electrode wear, yellow or brown tint to the glass envelope. Bring the projector to us for a lamp authenticity and condition check before purchase — our lamp replacement service page lists what a genuine lamp inspection involves.
When to call a technician
When the counter won't reset or warning persists
Call if: the lamp warning OSD persists after a counter reset and power cycle; the counter reset menu is not accessible on your model and you have installed a new lamp; or you have acquired a used projector and cannot verify whether the lamp hours are genuine. We diagnose at your door for ₹149.
A note from the PRW Engineer Team
Across our 5k+ projector repairs in India, the lamp counter reset abuse pattern is most common on projectors bought second-hand or from unverified sellers. The tell: the projector starts dimming noticeably after 200–300 hours, because the "new" lamp is actually an aged unit with a reset counter. Always source projectors from verified sellers and always ask for the actual lamp hours — not just the counter reading.
