Why BenQ firmware updates matter for picture quality
Short answer: BenQ releases firmware to fix HDR tone-mapping errors, colour accuracy drift on cinema-grade models, and HDMI 2.1 signal recognition bugs. On the W2700 4K home cinema projector, several firmware versions improved the DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage by correcting a factory colour management miscalibration — a visible difference when watching mastered content without any hardware change.
BenQ projector firmware update — pre-update checklist
Step 1: Confirm the current firmware version and check if an update exists
Press Menu on the remote, go to System Setup → About Projector or Information, and note the Firmware Version string. Visit BenQ's support page (benq.com/support), search your exact model (e.g., W2700, MH535, TK700STi), and check under Firmware for any version newer than what you have. If BenQ shows no firmware listed for your model, it means no update has been released and no action is needed.
Step 2: Choose the correct update method for your BenQ model
BenQ projectors use three distinct update paths. Traditional lamp and laser models (MH, MW, LH, LW, TK series without Android) use USB drive updates. Smart Android-based models (W4000i, TK850i, GP20) support OTA updates via the BenQ Smart System menu under Settings → About → System Update. Legacy models (MP-series) require RS-232 (serial) connection with BenQ's service tool — this is a technician-level procedure. If you are unsure which path your model uses, check the BenQ product page under Connectivity for "Smart System" mention.
Step 3: Execute the USB update — safe procedure
Format a USB drive to FAT32. Download the BenQ firmware file (a .bin file) from BenQ's official support page. Copy the file to the root directory of the USB drive — not inside any folder. Power on the projector and let it reach the input selection screen. Insert the USB drive into the USB-A port on the projector side or rear panel. On most BenQ models, a firmware update prompt will appear automatically within 10 seconds. Confirm the update and do not touch the remote, switch inputs, or interrupt power until the progress bar completes and the projector restarts. Verify the firmware version after restart.
Step 4: Post-update checks and the India power context
After the restart, check: (1) Firmware version in System Setup matches the downloaded version. (2) Picture modes (Cinema, Bright, Game, sRGB) are still accessible. (3) HDMI inputs respond correctly to your source devices. In India, power cuts and voltage spikes during afternoon peak hours are the primary cause of failed BenQ firmware updates. Connect through a UPS for the duration of the flash — a ₹2,000 desktop UPS provides ample protection. See our companion guide on projector picture mode calibration if you want to reset Cinema mode after a major firmware update.
When to call a technician
When DIY ends
Call if: the projector enters a boot loop after the update; a solid red lamp LED appears post-restart; the OTA update downloaded but failed to install and the unit now shows an error; or the USB method was attempted with an NTFS-formatted drive and the unit shows erratic behaviour afterwards.
Typical service cost in India
BenQ firmware recovery (service tool) costs ₹1,500 to ₹3,500. For on-site service in Hyderabad, we bring the tools to you. Also see our Epson firmware update guide if you manage a multi-brand fleet.
A note from the PRW Engineer Team
BenQ's smart projectors with Android-based OTA are actually the easiest to update in India because the download happens over the projector's own Wi-Fi connection — no USB preparation required. The only caution: ensure the Wi-Fi is stable (not a congested 2.4 GHz network) before starting. For traditional USB models, the checklist above covers all the failure points we have diagnosed across our 5k+ projector repairs.
